365 days : first date

2/11/19

This young man drove 5 hours to take me on a real first date ... I was 3 years older and and in passing he heard I had never been asked out and picked up in a car and taken out.  So, the young gentleman that he was....he made it happen.
I still remember how nervous this young punk rock kid was when he asked.
We had known each other for a few years because he hung out like a little brother in our circle of friends.
Just a kid.
I couldn't say no, because he put so much effort into it and he really was a sweet heart.
Picked me up in his classic Caliente car that he had just had repainted....and if I remember correctly we got rear ended in Little 5 Points on the way to the movie.
He kept his cool.

I believe we saw a movie, had dinner, and he took me home, walked me to the door, and kissed me on the cheek.
I believe he was just 16 or 17 and I was 19 or 20....
I had moved many times, and we both went through many changes...
The other day when I was cleaning, I found a stack of postcards from throughout the years he had sent me.
Back before the internet etc...
postcards :)
A young man who wrote.
and was also very punk rock.
What a flipping gem.
well,

Today is his birthday.
47
He has grown up,

No, this is not the Dude.

We still adore each other.
We talk almost everyday and we always joke we have the longest surviving
long distance relationship ever.
I don't believe we had ever kissed or anything else...

Always a gentleman.

I'm grateful he is still in my life.
This big badass man....

Happy Birthday, Travis

it's been about 30 years
xox,
write ya later,

Happy Birthday Dana D....old lady

My first day of work in Boulder Colorado I had to call in sick because I was puking and crying on the way to work.  All I could think was that this lady gave me a job, knew nothing about me, and here I am snot and puke out the car door begging it to go away.  My boyfriend at the time called in, "She's really sick, and she really wants to come in but she looks awful".
They granted me the day off. Maybe they thought I wouldn't come back.
I went back and that began my life at the Walnut Cafe, with my first away from home family I ever had.  And boy howdy, were we a family, bitchiness and all.
My bosses were slave drivers...I swear to god.  I can't tell you how many times I heard,
"Oh you crybaby, put your big girl panties on and suck it up...."
Then 2 hours later, "Come on Red, have a piece of Pie with me"
grrrrrrrr
How many tearful events in the back thinking I can't work another day? Then back I go, smile and do it...and actually love it after the fact.
How many margarita bitch sessions were held at Casa Alvarez?  Too many to count.
She was there for the birth of my son, right there with the rest of my family (walnut cafe)...rooting me on...then quietly telling after all was said and done, "Man, I ain't NEVER having a baby...that was crazy!"
She found me a sitter, so I could come back to work and not worry about it...and if I remember correctly she even paid her, so I wouldn't freak out, because I tend to freak out.
For that, I was forever grateful.
One time I asked her how the Walnut happened...She said she was all ready working, might as well own the place...she told me she was gonna be a millionaire in time to enjoy it...saved her money, borrowed a bit...and worked her ass off, and if you have seen her you know she has no ass...Now, I'm not saying she is a millionaire, but I know for a fact she is a millionaire in heart felt love and compassion ( and probably not hurting for dough, either.)

She is an amazing woman, More than our community could ever know.  She takes things in stride, doesn't gloat, and piles it on.  She is there when you need it...be it a kidney, money for a fund raiser or even a few kind words. She is a friend above friends.
She has made our community see equal rights aren't just for big city crazy gays ( I love you)...It's for all of us...right here, who serve you breakfast every morning.  She made it a safe place to show your love in any old direction.  She makes people realize love is love...and you can't deny love, especially with pie and Dana, in all her glory, shoving it in your face for a dollar a slice....while you wait for a table.

Today is her Birthday...
Her half a century
and man D...
My life would have been so different without you.
I am so thankful...
for you
Beautiful
loving
amazing you

PS:
I know for a fact she IS enjoying it...so when you see her out surfing, riding, scootering, snowboarding, hiking,...whatever,
give her the the thumbs up.
and be thankful she is on humanity's side.

360 days of my life #159

From the Smitten Kitchen  New York Cheesecake.
Yeah, mine was a bit brown on the top, ok a lot brown on top...you really have to watch it the first 7 minutes, and that means EVEN if you are drinking margaritas,it's not gonna watch itself!...and maybe the crust was a little thick in the corners...but it was a hit.
Sour Cherry topping from scratch...so easy, the entire thing was easy!!!  Seriously, I really couldn't believe it.  My Ma in law said, "wow, you whipped that up in a minute!"  It was actually 14 minutes it took to mix everything together and that included telling Olive to move 70 times and opening 5 boxes of cream cheese.
You guys should really try it...it was sooooo easy!

a couple of hints:  1. Watch the top on the first 12 minutes at 500 degrees...mine took only 8 minutes to get brown and even though I turned it down it still browned on the top.
2. make sure your cream cheese is room temp when you mix

360 days of my life #18

On my birthday I spent the day driving 5 teenage boys to laser tag and food...
then I got home and he said, "shall we go to dinner?"
Yes...sure, so as not to hurt anyones feelings for making an effort.
When he suggested a movie...I suggested...
home in bed so I could watch Cops...
that's ok, because its my birthday

thanks Synda for taking Olive :)
